Mr Bassem Amr (MB BCh, MRCS, MSc, MD, FRCS; GMC 7033374) is a Consultant Benign Upper GI and Bariatric Surgeon at County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust (University Hospital of North Durham), and the founder, course director, and faculty of the North of England FRCS General Surgery Mock Viva Course.
He graduated in medicine in 2003, with excellence, from Cairo University, before completing MRCS, an MSc in General Surgery, an MD, and the FRCS (Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh). He was subsequently awarded his CCT and completed a post-CCT RCS Senior Bariatric Fellowship before taking up his current post, and is a Member of the Faculty of Surgical Trainers, Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.
He has sat and passed the FRCS General Surgery Section 2 exam himself, and has spent the years since teaching and coaching candidates through that curriculum, through the course’s mock viva circuits and one-to-one coaching. The pattern he has observed is that candidates rarely fail on knowledge alone; a candidate who knows the material perfectly on paper often loses marks because of how it comes out under exam pressure. Closing that gap is the course’s focus, and the reason he started it.
Beyond the course, he is a former Education Lead at University Hospital North Durham, a founding faculty member of the RAPID course (Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh), and an experienced undergraduate examiner. He is the author of Think Like the Examiner and its companion volume The Art of the Answer.
